What Is a Mezuzah?

A mezuzah is a parchment scroll, on which the Shema is handwritten by a specially trained scribe according to Jewish law.

Affixed to the right side of the doorpost, the mezuzah serves as a constant reminder of G-d's presence and our Jewish heritage. Jewish tradition teaches that a kosher mezuzah brings blessing and protection to the home and to all who dwell within it.

Mezuzah Inspection & Maintenance

To ensure that a mezuzah remains kosher and legible, it is recommended that the parchment be inspected periodically by a qualified scribe. Over time, exposure to heat, humidity, sunlight, or natural aging can cause letters to fade, crack, or become damaged.

A traditional guideline is to have mezuzot checked twice every seven years. Some people choose to have them inspected more frequently, particularly during the Hebrew month of Elul, a time associated with reflection and spiritual preparation.
